  1. Currently, if I restart Mac OS X then everything is back to normal. What I'd like to do is reset the routing tables to the 'default' (e.g. What it is set to at boot) without a whole system reboot. I think that step 1 is route flush (to remove all routes). And step 2 needs to reload all of the default routes.

All of these activities can write new data to the parameter RAM. Writing data to the parameter RAM isn't an issue in itself, but it can be a source of problems when you change multiple items on your Mac.

Description

Enable media access control (MAC) flush processingfor the virtual private LAN service (VPLS) routing instance or forthe mesh group under a VPLS routing instance. MAC flush processingremoves MAC addresses from the MAC address database that have beenlearned dynamically. With the dynamically learned MAC addresses removed,MAC address convergence requires less time to complete.

For certain cases where MAC flush processing is not initiatedby default, you can also specify explicit-mac-flush-message-options that additionally configure the router to send explicit MACflush messages. To configure the router to send explicit MAC flushmessages under specific conditions, include explicit-mac-flush-message-options with the statement.

Note:

In the VPLS documentation, the word router in terms such as PE router is used to referto any device that provides routing functions.

In certain cases, BGP updates sent by the provideredge (PE) device are delayed for 1 to 5 seconds.

This happens when all of the following condtions aretrue:

  • BGP-based VPLS multihoming sites are configured.

  • The mac-flush statement is included in theconfiguration.

  • a non-minimum designated-forwarder site (site-x, for example)transitions to non-designated-forwarder status

The BGP update being delayed corresponds to the explicit-MACflush notification message sent by site-x's PE device (PE2, for example).This BGP update message is not deferred if the designated-forwarderstatus is lost due to a locally-triggered event (for example, a localattachment-circuit interface going down). In other words, BGP updatemessages are deferred (in Device PE2) only when the designated-forwarderstate is lost due to external events taking place in remote PE devicesthat also hold site-x (for example, in PE1). Suppose, for example,that Device PE1 is the default designated-forwarder with site-x'slocal interface in the DOWN state. Device PE2 defers BGP update messageafter Device PE1's local interface comes back to the UP state.

explicit-mac-flush-message-options—(Optional) You can specify one or more of the followingexplicit MAC flush message options:

  • any-interface—(Optional) Send a MAC flushmessage when any customer-facing attachment circuit interface goesdown.

  • any-spoke—(Optional) Send a MAC FLUSH-FROM-MEflush message to all provider edge (PE) routers in the core when oneof the spoke pseudowires between the multitenant unit switch and theother network-facing provider edge (NPE) router goes down, causingthe multitenant unit switch to switch to this NPE router.

    How to flush the DNS cache in macOS Sierra

    Refreshing the DNS cache on macOS Sierra is a little difference in syntax from refreshing the cache on High Sierra.
    1. Open the Finder and go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
    2. Enter (or copy-and-paste if it’s easier) the following syntax at the command line:
    sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder;say DNS cache has been flushed
    3. Press Return, enter your password, and press Return again.
    4. Listen out for the audio alert to signal that the cache has been successfully cleared.
    If for some reason the above syntax doesn’t work, you can use the following syntax in the Terminal instead:
    sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder;sudo killall mDNSResponderHelper;sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;say MacOS DNS cache has been cleared

    How to flush the DNS cache in Mac OS X El Capitan and Yosemite

    Both systems can flush the DNS cache in the following ways.
    1. Open the Finder and go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
    2. Enter the following syntax at the command line:
    sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder;say cache flushed
    3. Press Return, enter your password, and press Return again.
    4. Wait for the audio alert to signal a successful flush.
    5. Exit the Terminal.
    For OS X Yosemite versions 10.10, 10.10.1, 10.10.2, and 10.10.3 the process is slightly different. To fully flush all DNS caches, you’ll need to clear both the Multicast DNS (MDNS) and Unicast DNS (UDNS).
