The How to Float Notes over App Window using macOS Notes App
Long-time Mac users may have used the built-in Stickies application, which allows the user to keep virtual “Post-It” notes on their desktop. One of the main advantages of Stickies was that they could be configured to “float” or stay on top of all other windows, so that you always have access to the information they contained. barely touched the app in years, instead pushing users to the Notes app. In addition to offering more features, the Notes app has the benefit of iCloud sync, so you always have access to your notes on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. But many users still lack the old simplicity of the Stickies app and want the option to keep their notes on top of other windows under certain circumstances. The good news is that the Notes app also supports this “always on top” feature. The main user interface just doesn’t know how to access it. So if you are a Stickies recovery user who has now migrated to the Notes app, here is how to float a note in macOS.

When you launch the Notes app, you’ll see a single window with all of your notes together, with the list of your notes displayed in the sidebar. When we float a note, we will separate it from this unified interface so that the note in question occupies its own window. To do this, double-click the desired note entry in the sidebar or select the note and then choose Window> Float selected note in the menu bar at the top of the screen.This will only display the selected note in its own separate window from the main Notes application. Now, if you just wanted a particular note to exist in its own window, you’re good to go. The note will act like any other app window in macOS, including being positioned below any active windows that cover it. To keep the note always on top, click it once to make sure it’s active, then select Window> Float on top from the menu bar.This keeps the note in its separate window, but now ensures that it will always stay on top of all other app windows, regardless of which app is active. This can be useful if you want to reference information on your note while using an app that would otherwise cover the note.

There is one big limitation to keep in mind when using Floating Notes, and especially Floating Notes which are always on top – they won’t work with fullscreen apps. In what might be considered an oversight from Apple, you can’t position a note, even if it’s been set to float overhead, on an app or full-screen window. You can make a windowed app occupy the full desktop as shown with Google Maps in Safari in the screenshot above, but if you put Safari or any other app in dedicated fullscreen mode, the rating will not be not visible until you return to It certainly limits the usefulness of Floating Notes, especially given Apple’s continued push and improved full-screen app experience in macOS. But as long as you stick to windowed apps on the desktop, you’ll benefit from the old Stickies app with all the sync and formatting features available in the new Notes app.

Abstract
For the past year, I have served as the Executive Producer for the sketch comedy television show Float Your Boat. Syracuse University students produce this show through the student run television station, Citrus TV. The show is a single camera show shot entirely out of studio and on location. Each episode is composed of several sketches that can range from thirty seconds to five minutes. Each individual sketch is also posted online through a variety of websites visited by college students. Additionally, the complete episode is posted online and screened at the end of each semester. The screening is open to the entire Syracuse Community.
As Executive Producer, I accepted all responsibilities in making sure that Float Your Boat met our deadlines and requirements set forth by the Citrus TV Executive Staff. Additionally, I made sure that we produced a show of the highest quality. With this title I also oversaw a cast and crew of roughly thirty people. My responsibilities included but were not limited to: recruiting and maintaining an adequate cast and crew to facilitate the show, organizing two meetings every week for coordinating shoots and developing scripts, reserving equipment and locations for shoots, casting shoots, delegating post production assignments, and ensuring workflow moved at a pace that allowed us to meet the station’s requirements. I also had the last say in interpreting the guidelines set forth by Citrus TV with regards to content being appropriate or not to air.
In addition to this managerial work, I was heavily involved with the creative production of Float Your Boat. I served as the show’s head writer, principle director, cinematographer, director of photography, sound designer and editor. I was involved at some level with every sketch produced through Float Your Boat. Often times, I oversaw a sketch through each step of production from formulating the idea to finalizing it in postproduction.
I also have spent a great deal of time this semester teaching the underclassmen in Float Your Boat the skills and knowledge needed to produce a quality television show. I have already named next year’s Executive Producer and have begun teaching him the skills needed to ensure the show will be just as successful next year. With the underclassmen taking a more hands on approach, the show will continue to make quality content next fall despite this year’s seniors graduating. This being said, my job as Executive Producer of Float Your Boat was essentially to make the best possible quality show this year while laying the groundwork for next year’s show to be equally successful.
